Educating the Next Generation About Light Pollution
Most children growing up in Indian cities have never seen the Milky Way. They learn about stars and constellations from textbooks, but the light-polluted skies above their homes reveal only a handful of the brightest stars. The Dark Sky School Program aims to change this — by bringing light pollution education into classrooms and taking students out under the real night sky.
The Program
Our comprehensive school outreach program includes:
- Classroom Workshops: Interactive presentations about light pollution, its effects on wildlife and health, and practical solutions students can implement at home
- Stargazing Sessions: Telescope-based night sky observations at school grounds or nearby dark sites, guided by trained astronomers
- Light Audit Projects: Students learn to measure and map light pollution in their neighborhoods using simple tools and smartphone apps
- Dark Sky Ambassador Program: Outstanding students are trained as ambassadors who spread awareness in their communities
- Art & Science Integration: Drawing and essay competitions on night sky themes, connecting artistic expression with scientific understanding
Our Impact So Far
Since 2022, the Dark Sky School Program has reached over 10,000 students across 100+ schools in Maharashtra. Students who participated in the program showed a 78% increase in awareness about light pollution and a 45% adoption rate of simple light-reduction practices at home.
Your Support
Rs. 2,000 funds a complete classroom workshop for 40 students. Rs. 10,000 sponsors a stargazing session with telescopes for an entire school. Rs. 50,000 can establish a permanent astronomy club at a school with ongoing support for a full academic year. Help us light up young minds — with knowledge, not pollution.
